Stabilizers REALLY Do Work

The day started with an early morning briefing by Tentative Tim; proprietor of Delaware City Marina. Forecasting called for tumultuous seas accompanied by strong winds… scaring off several other crews, but not that of Kairos. After a light breakfast and sailor showers, we departed to transit the Delaware River and Bay en route to Cape May.

The cruise began with multiple electronic hiccups – no electronic engine controls, no AIS and an aggressively overcompensating autopilot… all resolved with little delay. A check in the engine room shortly after departure revealed a persistent stabilizer hydraulic leak. After video investigation at multiple angles, the source of the leak was identified. The cracker jack crew formulated a plan to resolve the leak; send Jesse down with a 7/8 wrench… in long sleeves of course to the 120 degree engine room outboard of the starboard engine. 20 minutes later, the repair was completed and in an environmentally friendly manner, every drop of hydraulic fluid was accounted for.

By 1300 hrs, the crew was getting hungry –

“With onions!”

Time for Chef Rondeau to prepare our mid day sustenance… just as the seas started to pick up.

The seas continued to build; 30 knot sustained winds with gusts up to 40, six foot swells entering into Cape May Canal.

“Good job out there today, guys. But we could be better. Be more like the Kairos Crew”

With the winds coming from the west, the seas outside of Cape May Inlet were only six foot rolling swells… we opted to transit to Atlantic City. Gliding into a slip at the Golden Nugget.

Final approach

After 91 miles over 10 hours, time for a little bit of rest and relaxation.
