Excited to have all our new upgrades we set out on a planned two week trip to return from Edgewater, MD to Wickford, RI. Our first stop: Chestertown, MD. A nice new municipal marina and a quaint town with plenty of revolutionary war history. After our overnight during a routine engine room check we noted some oil on the drip pad under the starboard engine. The source was from the outboard valve cover.
Fortunately we were passing by Shore Power Solutions in Kent Narrows who had performed routine maintenance the prior Fall and we stopped by to have one of their techs replace the valve cover gasket. An hour after the repair was done, as we continued to head north the valve cover leak persisted and we ducked into Warton Creek Marina. Richie, the owner of SPS called to see how we were doing….I told him of the persistent leak….he made arrangements for one of his techs to come the next morning to again replace the gasket….we then found that we likely had a cylinder failure. SPS made arrangements for us to be hauled out in Kent Narrows at the marina adjacent to their shop so we could begin repairs. As we hobbled out of Warton Creek we got a call from our friends Trish and Dave aboard their KK48 Laurel Anne who were just passing by at that moment as they were heading north. It turns out we had two bad cylinders….ended up having the block sent for reboring and sleeving. We were fortunate to have SPS available to get the work done promptly.
While laid up we tackled some the cockpit brightwood. After stripping the old varnish we easily applied Jamestown Distributors Totalboat Halcyon Water based marine varnish. We’re quite pleased with the finish. We’ll see how it holds up but the application could not have been easier. Finally, with the engine installed and sea trialed, we were ready to head north again a month later.
